FAIL: Thousands of Medical Records Dumped in Recycling Bin On Sunday morning, Karen and Scott Keith made their monthly stop at the Land O’ Lakes Recycling center in Florida to drop off household recycling items. When they looked at the paper bin it was not only full to the point of pushing up the lid, it was practically bursting at its seams. Inside were what looked to be thousands of pastel and manila file folders, all with neat tabs attached. Curious, they pulled out a couple and were stunned to see that they appeared to be medical records, Karen Keith said. The information inside the files included Social Security numbers, copies of drivers’ license numbers and even credit cards numbers Whether these records were dumped by a local doctor or an unscrupulous vendor remains to be seen. If the doctor thought he was saving money, boy was he wrong. Recent laws impose a fine of $50,000 per record if the act is negligent or intentional. While the fine is capped, the doctor may be on the hook for literally millions of dollars. We work with practices all of the time that are simply concerned about saving money on the front end. With such enormous fines for lost information, improperly converted information, and files that are not disposed of properly, choosing a vendor simply based on cost could prove to be a dangerous mistake.
